MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday said it continues to monitor its online platforms and shield these from possible cyberattacks.

This came as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) warned of possible Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on Nov. 5, targeting various websites and networks.

DDoS occurs when actors flood a website with traffic, causing it to slow down or crash.

PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. assured that various units are working with the DICT to strengthen the firewalls and integrity of the hardware and software they are using.

“We have different systems and in fact, we’ve been victims of that cyberattack, na-compromise ‘yung ating data (our data was compromised), especially sa (in) logistics, the firearms, and others. And we are continuously protecting that,” Nartatez told reporters in a press briefing held at Camp Crame in Quezon City. “To protect our system ay ginagawa natin ang iba’t-ibang activities like to ensure firewall, ensure the integrity of hardwares and even software.”

He added that the PNP also assures the integrity of its personnel who manage sensitive data.

“Even ‘yung mga tao natin na gumagamit ng mga system na ito, either they are the administrator or recipient of this data. So, kailangan may integrity doon (To protect our system, we do various activities like ensuring firewalls, ensuring the integrity of hardwares and even software. And even our people who use these systems, either they are the administrator or recipient of this data. So, there needs to be integrity there),” he explained.

The e-Warrant is among several vital digital systems that the PNP is securing against possible cyberattacks. It serves as a nationwide database for arrest warrants, allowing police to verify and act on cases in real time.

The PNP is likewise protecting its Situation Report and Incident Recording System , as well as databases on firearms, explosives and internal disciplinary cases under the Internal Disciplinary Mechanism Information System.

Nartatez said these interconnected systems hold critical and sensitive data essential to police operations.

The DICT has earlier urged government agencies and the public to remain cautious, regularly update passwords and report suspicious online activities.
