Who Were the Victims of the Lapu-Lapu Festival Tragedy?

On April 26, 2025, during the Lapu-Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver, a tragic incident occurred when a vehicle drove into a crowd, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuring over 30 others. The victims, ranging in age from 5 to 65, were members of the diverse and vibrant community gathered to celebrate Filipino heritage.

Jenifer Darbellay

Jenifer Darbellay, 50, was a costume designer and the wife of Hallmark actor Noel Johansen. She was attending the festival with her family when the incident occurred.

Jenifer was known for her selflessness and dedication to her family.Her husband, Noel, who was also injured in the attack, described her as “larger than life” and emphasized her compassionate nature.

The Le Family

The Le family suffered a devastating loss with the deaths of Richard Le, 47, his wife Linh Hoang, 30, and their 5-year-old daughter, Katie Le. Their 16-year-old son, Andy Le, survived the tragedy as he was at home during the festival. In a remarkable act of generosity, Andy chose to donate a significant portion of the funds raised for him to support other victims of the tragedy.

Clara “Kira” Ganapol Salim

Clara “Kira” Ganapol Salim, 34, was a Brazilian-born educator and musician. She worked as a school counselor in New Westminster and was a founder of the Carnival group Marcha Nerd.

Kira was passionate about facilitating and guiding marginalized communities, aiming to create diverse and equitable environments.

The Samper Family

The Samper family, originally from Colombia, lost three members: Glitza Maria Caicedo, her husband Daniel Samper, and their adult daughter, Glitza Daniela Samper. They were remembered as loving individuals who had become integral parts of their community in Vancouver.

Maria Victoria Bjarnason

Maria Victoria Bjarnason was a Filipina visiting Vancouver to see her two sons. Her visit, meant to be a joyful reunion, ended in tragedy. Her family and community mourn her untimely passing.

Rizza Pagkanlungan

Rizza Pagkanlungan was among the attendees who lost their lives during the festival. Described by her family as a vibrant and loving individual, Rizza’s sudden passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew her.

Jendhel May Sico

Jendhel May Sico was another victim of the tragic event. Details about her life and contributions to the community are being remembered and honored by those who knew her.

The Lapu-Lapu Festival tragedy has left an indelible mark on the Vancouver community and beyond. As investigations continue, the memories of those lost serve as a poignant reminder of the lives that were tragically cut short. The community’s response, marked by solidarity and support, underscores the resilience and compassion that emerge in the face of adversity.
