Parts of Roxas Boulevard closed on Wednesday due to nationwide earthquake drill — MMDA

MANILA — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Tuesday that parts of Roxas Boulevard will be closed to vehicular traffic on Wednesday to give way for the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management (NDRRMC) nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill.

NDRRMC Executive Director Alexander Pama said the drill would be launch along Roxas Boulevard in Manila near the US embassy at 9:30 a.m. on July 2.

He said anti-disaster drills will be conducted simultaneously all over the country in coordination with local government units to keep the public aware on how to respond to various disasters, including earthquakes and floods.

Pama said it is important that the public know what to do if disasters such as quakes, floods and fires strike.

In its advisory, the MMDA said section of Roxas Boulevard from T.M. Kalaw to Quirino will be closed from 7 a.

MMDA advised motorists to use the following alternative routes:

All vehicles coming from northern part of Manila/Pier zone intending to utilize the southbound lane of Roxas Boulevard: Turn left to P. Burgos, right to Ma. Orosa, right to TM Kalaw, left to MH del Pilar, or use Taft Avenue to point of destination.

Vehicles coming from south of Manila intending to utilize the northbound lane of Roxas Boulevard: Turn right towards President Quirino, then left to Taft Avenue.

All vehicles coming from Jones, MacArthur or Quezon bridge: Use the southbound lane of Roxas Boulevard, go straight to Taft Avenue to point of destination.

Meanwhile, the city government of Manila is set to conduct its first city-wide multi-disaster drill that will detail preparations for possible disaster scenarios like major earthquakes, fires, and road accidents.

During the event, Manila will showcase its new disaster response equipment such as 12 rescue boats, water search and rescue gears, amphibious trucks, rescue vans, and other vehicles.

The said drill is in observance of July as National Disaster Consciousness Month.

He said the theme this year is, “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran.”

Pama said that series of disaster drills this July is part of the government’s continuing efforts in enhancing public awareness and strengthening the nation’s capability in disaster prevention, management and response.

Pama also urged the local and private stakeholders especially the schools to participate seriously in these activities as this could save many lives.
