MANILA — Malacañang on Tuesday expressed concern over infighting among Commission on Elections (Comelec) officials and urged all concerned to resolve their differences for the effective fulfillment of the agency’s mandate.

“We cannot but be concerned that Comelec work is being affected by recent travails,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said in a Palace briefing.

“Without unduly interfering or influencing the commission, we urge all parties to work together for the full performance of its duties,” Abella said.

The Palace official issued the statement following a brewing conflict between Comelec chairman Andres Bautista and the election agency’s commissioners.

Last Thursday, all six Comelec commissioners have asked Bautista to either take a leave or resign after an impeachment case was filed against the agency chair.

The embattled election official is also embroiled in a bitter public dispute with his estranged wife.

Patricia, had accused her husband of possessing PHP1 billion in unexplained wealth.

The events are unfolding as the Comelec prepares for the village and youth elections in October.

However, there are moves in Congress to postpone the said elections for next year. (PNA)
