Comelec orders ER Ejercito to step down due to overspending in the last elections
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has ordered Laguna Governor ER Ejercito to step down from his post due to overspending in the 2013 elections.
“The en banc decision is unanimous, there are seven members of the commission, so the decision for Ejercito to vacate the position was unanimous, meaning each commissioner decided based on documents presented to the poll body,” Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said in an interview on Wednesday.
He added that Vice Governor Ramil Hernandez will take over Ejercito’s post.
Based on the documents gathered from the Laguna Provincial Election Office, Ejercito spent P23.5 million in the last elections.
According to Comelec, the amount that candidates can spend per constituent is P3.
There are 1,440,660 voters in Laguna in 2010 as per the Philippine Statistics Authority.
In order to stop Comelec from enforcing its order, Ejercito has five days to get a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court.
