Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has criticized China over its renewed assertions questioning the Philippines’ sovereignty over the Batanes Islands, saying Beijing appears unmoved by diplomatic appeals from Manila.
Speaking on Saturday, November 7, Teodoro described China as “manhid,” or insensitive, when asked what message he wanted to convey to the Chinese government amid the latest claims.
The defense chief said diplomatic messaging had little effect on Beijing, adding that Filipinos should instead remain vigilant against narratives that challenge the country’s territorial rights.
The remarks followed renewed claims from Chinese scholars questioning the historical and legal basis of Philippine sovereignty over Batanes. Some researchers have reportedly argued that the islands are geographically connected to Taiwan and should fall under Chinese sovereignty.
The Philippine government has firmly rejected the assertions, maintaining that Batanes is an integral part of the country and that there is no legal basis for China’s claims.
Teodoro has previously described the arguments as baseless and warned that such narratives could be used to justify China’s broader strategic interests in the Pacific.
The issue has also drawn concern from Philippine security officials, who have warned against allowing disputed historical interpretations to create confusion over the country’s territorial boundaries.
Teodoro urged Filipinos to remain critical of information coming from China and to continue supporting the Armed Forces of the Philippines and other personnel tasked with protecting the country’s national interests.
Batanes, the Philippines’ northernmost province, occupies a strategic location between Luzon and Taiwan, making it significant to regional security and maritime affairs.
The government maintains that the province is Philippine territory and has rejected any attempt to question its sovereignty.
