An 18-year-old student and his 26-year-old brother have been linked to a series of online threats targeting schools in Batangas, according to the Philippine National Police.
Police spokesperson Colonel Allen Rae Co said investigators identified the siblings following a cybercrime operation in Barangay San Lucas, Lipa City, on September 22.
Authorities implemented a warrant to search, seize and examine computer data from the two suspects. They recovered two mobile phones and a tablet allegedly used to spread threatening messages that disrupted classes in several schools across the province.
Co said the initial threat was directed at the school attended by the younger sibling. Investigators believe the brothers later circulated similar threats against other schools in different locations in an attempt to mislead authorities as the investigation intensified.
The threats reportedly began in August and prompted concern among school communities, with some institutions taking precautionary measures to protect students and personnel.
Based on the police investigation, the siblings allegedly had no access to firearms or other weapons and were not capable of carrying out the threatened violence. Co described the incidents as pranks but stressed that such threats should not be taken lightly.
The PNP said the operation forms part of its efforts to address cybercrime and prevent threats from disrupting school activities.
Authorities continue to remind the public against making or sharing threatening messages online, as these can cause panic and lead to serious consequences.
