Philippine stocks are expected to face cautious trading this week as a weakening peso, elevated global oil prices and the possibility of further interest rate hikes weigh on investor confidence.
In its market outlook for November 2 to 6, F. Yap Securities Inc. said investors are likely to remain watchful of economic developments and corporate earnings, particularly as higher borrowing costs and inflation concerns continue to affect market sentiment.
The brokerage also pointed to uncertainty surrounding the peso and rising fuel prices as key risks for the local equities market.
A weaker peso makes imported goods, particularly fuel, more expensive, potentially adding pressure to inflation and business operating costs. Higher interest rates, meanwhile, could increase borrowing expenses for companies and limit their growth plans.
Investors are also monitoring developments in global markets, including the possibility of additional monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) ended the previous trading week at 5,680.35 points, down 48.28 points or 0.84 percent.
Market participants are expected to closely examine third-quarter corporate earnings and forward guidance for signs of how businesses are coping with higher costs and economic uncertainty.
With inflation, currency movements and oil prices remaining major concerns, analysts expect investors to be selective in positioning their portfolios in the coming sessions.
