Brazil’s political left is gaining ground in the digital space following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s re-election, with a massive WhatsApp network helping mobilize supporters and spread campaign messages across the country.

Known as “Lula’s Army,” the online movement was led by Congressman André Janones, who organized millions of supporters through a WhatsApp channel. Members were encouraged to share campaign videos, promote hashtags, recruit new participants and engage voters online.

The network reportedly grew from around 60,000 followers after the first round of voting to nearly 11 million by election day, becoming a major platform for pro-Lula supporters.

Its rapid expansion reflected a shift in Brazil’s political communication, where right-wing groups had previously been widely recognized for their strong presence on social media.

The campaign used simple, direct messages and coordinated online activities to encourage supporters to participate in the election. It also helped connect digital campaigning with grassroots efforts, allowing supporters to spread political content beyond traditional campaign channels.

Political analysts, however, caution that the network’s direct impact on the election result is difficult to measure. While Lula’s allies credit the movement with helping turn the campaign around, experts point to several factors, including changes in messaging and stronger grassroots mobilization.

The movement has also raised questions about whether the same level of online engagement can be sustained beyond the election campaign, particularly as Lula faces the challenge of governing with a divided political landscape.

The rise of “Lula’s Army” highlights how digital platforms are becoming increasingly important tools for political organizing and voter engagement in Brazil.
