The Canadian federal government plans to extend $1.2 billion in funding for mental health, addiction treatment and home care services by another year, offering provinces and territories additional support as they face concerns over the future of health-care programs.

Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel announced the extension in a social media post on October 14, following warnings from provincial and territorial health ministers that the loss of federal funding could have serious consequences for patients and health-care workers.

The funding agreements are scheduled to expire in March 2027. Provincial officials have been urging Ottawa to renew the commitments, warning that without continued support, some services could face funding gaps and health-care jobs could be affected.

Dedicated federal investments have helped provinces develop programs for mental health and addiction services, community care and home support. Health advocates have also stressed the importance of maintaining these investments as demand for services continues.

The funding extension comes amid broader discussions about the federal government’s long-term health-care commitments. Provinces and territories have raised concerns about the future of the Canada Health Transfer, which is guaranteed to increase by at least five per cent annually until 2028. Under the current federal framework, the minimum annual increase is set to fall to three per cent after that period.

Provincial and territorial health ministers are scheduled to meet in Winnipeg to discuss funding and other health-care priorities, with Michel expected to co-chair a meeting on Friday.

The federal government is preparing to present its budget later this fall, when further details about its spending priorities and health-care commitments are expected to emerge.

While the one-year extension provides additional time for provinces and territories to plan, questions remain about longer-term funding arrangements and how governments will sustain mental health, addiction and home care programs beyond the extended agreement.
