A set of public pickleball courts in Port Stanley, Ontario, has become the centre of a growing dispute between players and nearby residents over noise, operating hours and whether the courts should remain.
The four courts at Kokomo Park are popular with local players, but some neighbours say the noise from games has become a nuisance. The dispute has now reached Central Elgin municipal council, with both sides presenting their concerns.
The municipality changed the courts’ operating hours in July following complaints, limiting play to 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Previously, the courts were available from dawn to dusk.
Pickleball players have responded with a petition carrying 130 signatures, asking the municipality to allow play from 8 a.m. until dusk. They also want a noise study and greater involvement in future discussions. Players say earlier morning hours are important, particularly during hot and humid weather.
The dispute has also taken a legal turn. A lawyer representing a condo owner and the Kokomo Affected Neighbours warned the municipality that legal action could be pursued if the courts are not removed, arguing that their use could amount to a nuisance and interfere with residents’ right to the quiet enjoyment of their properties.
Some residents, however, take a more moderate position. One neighbour said the courts can become busy in the evenings, with as many as 20 players and 15 to 20 vehicles, but believes the existing 8 p.m. closing time can help balance the interests of players and nearby residents.
Central Elgin has received both the players’ petition and the residents’ legal concerns, but no decision has yet been made on whether to change the hours or remove the courts.
For now, a recreational sport that has brought people together has also created a difficult question for the community: how should public spaces balance recreation with the peace and quiet of nearby homes?
