Can Zelenskyy’s Canada visit strengthen support for Ukraine as the war drags on

CANADA – With the war in Ukraine still taking a heavy human and economic toll, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska have arrived in Calgary for a three day visit aimed at strengthening Canada’s support for Kyiv.

Zelenskyy is set to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney in Calgary, where the two leaders are expected to sign agreements and hold a joint media availability.

The September 9 to 11 visit will take Zelenskyy to Calgary, Toronto and North Bay, Ontario, while he is also scheduled to address members of Carney’s cabinet during the Cabinet Planning Forum in Banff.

The talks are expected to focus on defence, economic cooperation and energy, as well as the continuing humanitarian impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

For Ottawa, the visit is also an opportunity to reaffirm Canada’s long term commitment to Ukraine’s defence, recovery and reconstruction.

As Zelenskyy meets Canadian officials across the country, the visit highlights a relationship shaped not only by military and economic cooperation, but also by the human cost of a war that continues to reshape Ukraine and its future.
