Ottawa councillor pushes to erase Trump’s name from city street

CANADA – A street bearing U.S. President Donald Trump’s name in Ottawa could soon get a new identity as a city councillor calls for its renaming amid worsening tensions between the two countries.

River Ward Coun. Riley Brockington said it is time to reconsider the name of Trump Avenue, a residential street in Ottawa’s Central Park neighbourhood that has carried the name for more than two decades.

The proposal comes as Trump’s trade policies have intensified tensions with Canada, including the imposition of new tariffs on Canadian goods.

The street has faced calls for a name change before. In 2021, residents were asked to vote on the issue, but the result ended in a 21-21 tie, leaving the name unchanged.

Brockington now plans to pursue a new community process for changing the street’s name, with residents expected to have a say before any final decision is made.

The renewed push has also sparked creative suggestions for a replacement name, including “TACO Avenue,” a satirical reference to the phrase “Trump Always Chickens Out.”

The proposal is more than a street-name debate for some residents, it has become a reflection of the increasingly strained relationship between Ottawa and Washington.

As trade tensions rise, one Ottawa street may soon lose the name that once put it on the map.
