PHILIPPINES – A proposed Senate measure seeks to give more Filipino senior citizens greater financial security by raising the monthly social pension for qualified beneficiaries to PHP1,000.

Senate Bill No. 269, filed by Senator Bam Aquino, would cover seniors who do not receive a social pension or whose existing pension does not exceed PHP3,000.

Aquino said many older Filipinos struggle to earn a living because of age discrimination, physical limitations and fewer employment opportunities, leaving families to shoulder their daily needs.

The proposed regular pension could help beneficiaries pay for food, medicine, utilities, transportation and emergencies, while giving them greater control over their finances.

Aquino said Filipino seniors have spent decades contributing to the country’s development and deserve dependable support in their later years.

For many lolos and lolas, the proposed PHP1,000 is more than an allowance, it could mean a little more dignity, independence and security in old age.
