San Jose del Monte Mayor Rida Robes faces backlash over ‘Tubig’ chants, clash with councilor

San Jose del Monte Mayor Florida “Rida” Robes is facing criticism after videos showed her confronting residents who chanted “Tubig! Tubig!” during a basketball game and later arguing with an Akbayan city councilor whom she allegedly accused of instigating the crowd.

The incident happened during the Ate Rida’s Cup at the Minuyan Sports Complex on Sunday, August 23, as residents used the chant to call attention to persistent water supply problems in the city.

In videos circulating online, Robes was seen addressing spectators after the chants and telling them to show respect to elected officials.

“Kung sinoman ang nag-uudyok sa inyo na walanghiyaan ang isang punong-lungsod at kongresista, aba, mahiya naman kayo,” Robes said.

Robes was later seen approaching Akbayan Councilor Ronalyn Pordan and pointing and shouting at her in front of spectators.

Akbayan Partylist condemned what it described as the reported harassment and intimidation of Pordan, saying Robes allegedly accused the councilor of encouraging the chants—an allegation Pordan denied.

The group also cited reports that some people at the venue were told to surrender their phones and delete videos of the incident. These claims have not been independently verified.

Akbayan called on Robes to explain her actions and issue an apology, while urging residents to continue raising concerns over public services.

“Public office demands respect and accountability, not a license to intimidate, silence, or evade responsibility,” the group said.

The San Jose del Monte City Youth and Sports Development Office and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, meanwhile, defended the mayor and said the local government recognizes residents’ concerns over continuing water interruptions.

The offices, however, said grievances should be raised at the proper time, place and manner.

“We are not undervaluing or ignoring the complaints of our fellow San Joseños about the continuing problems with water supply,” the statement said in Filipino. “But there is a proper place, proper time, and proper way of doing it.”

The controversy has placed renewed attention on the city’s water supply problems and how local officials respond to residents publicly airing their complaints.
