Talosig bags bronze in Southeast Asia Open Water Championships

PHILIPPINES – De La Salle University swimmer Jie Angela Mikaela Talosig captured a bronze medal in the women’s 20-years-and-above division of the 4th Southeast Asia Open Water Championships in Boracay Newcoast, Aklan.

Talosig clocked 1:18:57 in her international debut, finishing behind Indonesia’s Nadya Sirasawati, who won gold in 1:07:23, and Thailand’s Musikul Hirunhas, who took silver in 1:09:15.

The 20-year-old Talosig entered the competition primarily to gain international experience. She recently won gold in the women’s 800-meter freestyle and two bronze medals at the UAAP Season 88 held at the New Clark City Aquatics Center in Capas, Tarlac.

Another Filipino swimmer, Julia Jewels Pobleto, also secured bronze in the girls’ 12-13 3-kilometer event after clocking 50:40.

Philippine Sports Commission Chair Patrick Gregorio said the three-day tournament provided Filipino swimmers an opportunity to compete against international athletes while promoting sports tourism.

Philippine Aquatics secretary-general Eric Buhain thanked the PSC and participating athletes for the successful staging of the championships, which he said could pave the way for bigger international open water swimming events in the country.
