CANADA – Manitoba businesses and industries are bracing for the potential impact of new US tariffs as trade tensions between Canada and the United States continue to escalate.

The province has significant economic ties with the US, with agriculture, manufacturing, and other industries relying heavily on cross-border trade. The prospect of higher tariffs has raised concerns over increased costs and disruptions to established supply chains.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has urged Canada to stand firm in its negotiations with Washington, warning against making major concessions simply to secure a trade agreement. He has also criticized the idea of restoring US alcohol products to Manitoba shelves without greater assurances on tariffs.

The latest developments come after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended trade negotiations with the US and said Canada would match the new American tariffs “dollar for dollar.”

For Manitoba, the dispute could have a direct impact on producers and businesses that depend on access to the American market. Industry groups are closely monitoring the situation as Ottawa and Washington consider their next steps.

The ongoing uncertainty has also renewed calls for Canada to strengthen domestic markets and diversify its trading relationships to reduce dependence on the US.
