The Philippine National Police (PNP) is tightening accountability measures for its personnel to prevent children and other unauthorized individuals from accessing police-issued firearms, following recent school shooting incidents.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police commanders nationwide to remind personnel about the proper storage and handling of firearms, particularly when they are off duty and at home.

Nartatez stressed that firearms must never be left where children or unauthorized persons can reach them, warning that even a moment of negligence could cost a life.

The directive follows recent shooting incidents at Ateneo de Zamboanga University Junior High School and San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte, involving firearms issued to government personnel.

The PNP will also strengthen firearm-accountability reminders during unit briefings and formations, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call to improve public safety and responsible firearm handling.

Meanwhile, the police will deploy personnel and resources for the Department of Education’s nationwide school safety drills on Aug. 25.

The PNP said the exercises will prepare students, teachers and school personnel for security threats while strengthening coordination among police units, schools, barangay officials and local governments.
