LONDON – Leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage has announced he is stepping down as the MP for Clacton to immediately contest a by-election.
He frames the move as a “people versus establishment” battle against what he calls a coordinated effort by Britain’s liberal elite to discredit him over allegations regarding undeclared gifts from wealthy backers.
Following weeks of scrutiny from the parliamentary watchdog, Farage described the accusations as a “pile-on” and argued that allowing his constituents to judge his actions in a fresh election is the best way to avoid sanctions while challenging the political establishment.
However, this high-stakes strategy has been widely condemned by major political parties as a desperate stunt designed to evade accountability rather than a genuine democratic exercise.
Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled the move a”desperate stunt,” and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch suggested Farage is “cracking under pressure.”
Notably, the governing Labour Party and the opposition Conservatives have decided not to field candidates in the upcoming Clacton by election.
