CANADA – China is imposing a 73.5% tariff on Canadian pea starch starting Wednesday after concluding an anti-dumping investigation launched in August 2025.
Pea starch is generally used as a thickener and stabilizer for human and animal food, as well as medications. The commerce ministry of China stated that Canadian exporters unloaded pea starch into the market.
The new tariff came in spite of improving diplomatic ties between the two countries after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing a few months ago, where Chinese President Xi Jinping approved a strategic trade partnership.
Tariffs on Canada eased on up to 49,000 Chinese e-vehicles, while China decreased duties on a few Canadian exports. However, a number of tariffs still remain, including China’s 100% levy on Canadian pork and canola items.
Meanwhile, Canada is currently monitoring Chinese trade practices, along with an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese steel racks.
