VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The City of Vancouver announced last week that it will hold a temporary memorial at Mountain View Cemetery on Fraser Street as the Filipino community remembers the April 26 Lapu-Lapu Day Festival tragedy a year later.
Located near Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue, the temporary space will offer the community a safe, accessible place for reflection near the site of the incident.
It will also provide a sheltered environment with seating and weather protection, intended to move mourners away from the hazards of the busy streets and nearby school grounds.
Community members are welcome to bring memorial items to the cemetery, though city officials strictly prohibit candles and glass objects for safety reasons. They also encouraged using flameless candles.
Any tributes left at the roadside will be gently relocated to the cemetery memorial one week following the commemoration, whereas wilted flowers and prohibited glass items will be respectfully composted or recycled.
POSSIBLE LONG-TERM MEMORIAL
Acknowledging the community’s collective desire for a permanent monument to remember the tragedy, city officials have stated that any long-term memorial will be guided by close coordination with the victims and their families.
However, no specific timeline has been established yet for a permanent site, citing the city’s continued priority to foster a space for healing and ongoing community conversation before moving forward with any formal commemoration plans.
