OTTAWA, Ontario — Global Affairs Canada expressed its deep alarm at the dangerous escalations in Lebanon that are heavily affecting civilians, infrastructure, and UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) peacekeepers.
“As a longstanding partner of Lebanon, we stand in solidarity with the Lebanese government and people, as Lebanon has been unwillingly drawn into the current conflict in the Middle East,” GAC said in a post.
The foreign affairs agency said that Canada recognizes Lebanon’s efforts to curb Hezbollah’s armed activities and welcomes its government’s recent steps toward stability with the Lebanese Armed Forces.
“The protection of civilians across the region must be an absolute priority. Canada urges all parties to uphold international humanitarian law and prevent further mass displacement resulting from hostilities. Canada will continue supporting humanitarian efforts in the region,” GAC said.
Several commenters, however, pointed out the statement’s “spineless” stance on the actual issue and blatant omission of a crucial fact, the aggressor against Lebanese people, Israel.
“Wow, it’s almost like we don’t have any idea who is attacking. Another spineless Canadian statement. Could it be Israel who has been making threats against Lebanon?” a user commented.
“You single out Hezbollah but don’t mention Israel. This is actively misleading,” another commented.
Israeli forces have been reportedly launching air strikes across Lebanon as they target the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, which has been sending retaliatory attacks following the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28, the start of the Israeli-United States war on Iran.
