Vatican City — Pope Leo XIV extended his solidarity for the affected Filipinos on Sunday, November 9, after Typhoon Uwan’s (international name: Fung-Wong) devastating onslaught in the Philippines.

Local authorities reported that more than a million people were evacuated as the typhoon, downgraded from its super typhoon status on Monday, made its landfall in Dinalungan, Aurora, last night.

The country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) recorded two deaths as of 6 AM. The two casualties were reportedly from the Bicol and eastern Visayas regions.

“I express my closeness to the people of the Philippines who have been hit by a violent typhoon: I pray for the deceased and their families, as well as for the injured and displaced,” the pope wrote on his X account.

The weather bureau PAGASA last located the typhoon in the West Philippine Sea after it crossed the Luzon landmass overnight, bound to exit the country’s area of responsibility on Tuesday.
