Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially named David Lametti as Canada’s next ambassador to the United Nations.

Canada’s new government has a mandate to strengthen and diversify our international partnerships, relying on principled and effective leaders to represent the value of Canada’s strength in a rapidly transforming world, Carney said in a statement announcing the appointment on Thursday.

CBC News first broke the story on Wednesday that the former justice minister was leaving the Prime Minister’s Office and being considered for a diplomatic role.

The former Liberal MP had been justice minister under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from 2019 to 2023. He resigned from Parliament in 2024.

Lametti had been serving as Carney’s principal secretary in recent months, and the two played hockey together at the University of Oxford.

Lametti will replace Canada’s outgoing UN representative, Bob Rae, on Nov. 17.

Rae congratulated Lametti in a social media post and indicated that he had spoken to Carney earlier this summer about leaving his post.

Carney also announced the appointment of Vera Alexander as Canada’s next ambassador to Germany. The career civil servant will replace John Horgan who died last year.
