Bill expanding coverage of tertiary education subsidy OK’d

MANILA – The House of Representatives on Monday unanimously approved on third and final reading the proposal seeking to expand the coverage of the tertiary education subsidy.
With 200 affirmative votes, the chamber passed House Bill 10560, which seeks to amend Republic Act 10931, otherwise known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
The bill aims to allow more underprivileged and academically competent students to study in private higher educational institutions (HEIs) and to benefit from the coverage of the tertiary education subsidy (TES) through the voucher system.
The bill extends the eligibility to avail of the TES to underprivileged and academically competent students enrolling in the first undergraduate post-secondary tertiary education program of their choice in private HEIs and technical-vocational institutions (TVIs)
It stipulates that all TES beneficiaries shall continue to receive such benefits or subsidies until they have completed their post-secondary technical-vocational course or higher education degree program.
The beneficiaries, for their part, should maintain their grades and residency requirements in accordance with the rules of the HEIs and TVIs.
