Canadian Red Cross Launches Fund to Support Croatia Earthquake Relief
The Canadian Red Cross has launched the Croatia Earthquake Appeal to support the delivery of critical humanitarian aid to those affected by the latest in a series of quakes to have struck the country. The Red Cross is working to coordinate emergency relief activities and get help to people in and around the affected areas as quickly as possible.
On December 29, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit central Croatia, the largest in 140 years. Petrinja and its surrounding area was the hardest hit, leaving seven dead and dozens injured. Hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes and are being accommodated in communal buildings and tents, increasing the risk of transmission of COVID-19. Mental distress, uncertainty, and anxiety are also of great concern, as another powerful magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the country earlier this year.
Money raised will enable the Red Cross to provide relief, recovery, and resiliency activities in response to this crisis.
Canadians wishing to donate are encouraged to make a financial donation to the Croatia Earthquake Appeal online at www.redcross.ca or by calling 1-800-418-1111.
