MANILA – The body of a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) officer who earlier tested positive for coronavirus disease and eventually recovered was found floating in Manila Bay near Pier 13 in Port Area on Thursday.

Based on initial findings released on Friday, the PCG found no signs of foul play that resulted in the death of Petty Officer Second Class Richard Gonzales assigned at the BRP Corregidor (AE-891).

The findings were based on the investigation of the Coast Guard Surface Support Force Investigation Team and the Manila Police District (MPD) Homicide Section.

It said documentary evidence and initial interviews suggested that Gonzales was going through financial problems and personal problems before he died.

“Possible marital discord between the victim and his common-law wife is being looked upon,” the PCG said.

The PCG report said Gonzales’ latest RT-PCR test showed he was no longer infected as of August 23.

Due to his recent bout with Covid-19, an autopsy has not yet been performed, but the PCG said it has sent the latest Covid-19 test results to the police to support the PCG and Gonzales’ family’s request for an autopsy.

The incident remains under investigation and more information will be provided after interviews with the family members, the retrieval of his mobile phone, and the release of his autopsy results.
