MANILA – It is not business as usual in the information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry, but the sector continues to open job opportunities amid the pandemic, an industry executive said.

During the Laging Handa briefing Friday, Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) president Rey Untal said while demand for tourism and hospitality services decline, there is an increasing demand for healthcare, telecommunications, and logistics services.

“While there are industries heavily affected by this pandemic such as travel, hospitality, and tourism, there are also implications in our industry. Our services around (these sectors), these also diminish,” Untal said in Filipino.

He said existing IT-BPM firms are expanding their head count in services related to healthcare, telecommunications, and logistics.

“As I talked to country heads of companies, they convey that they continue their recruitment activities,” Untal added.

Untal said despite job postings in employment marketplace JobStreet.com declined during enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) period, about 41 percent of the active job postings are in the IT-BPM industry.

Recently, two BPO firms announced they are opening job opportunities here wherein work-from-home arrangement is also offered.

Alorica, Inc. said they are in need of 4,000 employees by end of this month, while Singapore-based Everise is hiring 2,000 work-from-home customer care employees.

Untal said the industry’s productivity rate is reaching nearly 90 percent as the government relaxes quarantine measures and restrictions in public transportation have eased.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases has identified the IT-BPM sector as part of essential industries.

IT-BPM companies continue to operate even in areas under ECQ.
