The Government of Canada is pleased to celebrate the first anniversary of the Samuel De Champlain Bridge. This elegant and modern piece of infrastructure is designed to meet the various mobility needs of residents of the greater Montreal area and facilitates the transportation of essential goods worth billions of dollars annually.

Thanks to its innovative design and high-quality construction, the Samuel De Champlain Bridge has become one of the greatest successes among key infrastructure projects in Quebec and all of Canada. In 2018, it won the prestigious Envision Platinum Award for meeting the highest standards in sustainable development. The bridge has been awarded other prizes and distinctions since then, including the following:

  • Number 1 in Roads and Bridges magazine’s Top 10 Bridge awards, 2018
  • “Prix Infrastructures” award of the Assocation québécoise des transports, 2019
  • Governmental Leadership Award of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, 2019
  • Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Award of Excellence, “Coup de cœur du jury” (jury’s pick) category – Bridges (Quebec Region), 2019

Quotes

“The Samuel De Champlain Bridge allows people to travel from one shore to the other year–round, whether by car, truck, foot, bike and soon, on the Réseau express métropolitain light rail train. It lives in harmony with its environment and in solidarity with all citizens, as its rainbow lights have reminded us over the last few months. This bridge will be part of Montreal’s riverside landscape into the next century and will leave a positive legacy for generations to come. Thank you to the dedicated women and men who made the design and construction of the magnificent Samuel-De Champlain Bridge possible.”

The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

Quick facts
