Another Filipina singer is set to make her own version of “Reflection,’ the iconic song from the Disney movie “Mulan.”

Walt Disney Studios announced on its Facebook post that they tapped singer-songwriter Moira dela Torre, whom it described as “a warrior in her own right and a true voice of her generation,” to give her own rendition of the song for the release of the live-action remake of “Mulan” in the Philippines.

In an interview with MYX Philippines, Moira shared she was in disbelief as soon as she heard the news about her being chosen by Disney to sing “Mulan’s” theme song.

“I love the original versions of ‘Reflection,’ I have so much respect for it and my style is very far from theirs so I really really couldn’t believe it. But I’m very happy and grateful that Disney gave me this chance,” she said.

It can be recalled that Filipino Broadway star Lea Salonga lent her voice singing voice for the titular heroine in the 1998 animated movie, while it was pop icon Christina Aguilera who recorded its studio version in the same year.

Moira said she expected that Disney would give her “a lot of to-dos and dont’s” for her own version of the song, but to her surprise, they only gave her one rule which is simply ‘to be herself.

“At first, I had no idea what that meant; I had no idea to be myself because, you know, it’s scary but that exactly what ‘Reflection’ talks about. It talks about vulnerability. It talks about coming out of the shadow and being brave even if you are afraid,” the 26-year-old singer said.

Moira also talked about how she can relate to Mulan’s character, especially on the part that she will do everything for the sake of her family.

“Watching her, growing up, definitely planted a seed on me to keep fighting even if it gets tough. And, you know, to make sacrifices for the ones you love and I think that really resonated at me because I love my family so much,” she said.

On her Instagram account, Moira also announced the good news, saying that after almost 18 years, she finally had the opportunity to sing to the world the “first song I ever got to sing on my own in front of an audience.”

“I can’t wait for all of you to hear the song and to watch the music video, both of which will be coming out very, very soon,” she wrote in the caption.

Chinese-American actress Liu Yifei is playing the role of Mulan, a fearless young woman who disguises herself as a man and joins in the army to fight for her country, in place of her ailing father.

The live-action film is set to be released in the Philippines on March 25.
