MANILA — A PHP200,000 reward is awaiting anyone who could give information on those responsible for the improper disposal of pig carcasses found floating in Marikina River last week, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said Tuesday.

I am giving a PHP200,000 reward to anyone who will provide information on the culprits behind the disposal of 58 dead pigs in Marikina River. I’m shelling this amount from my own pocket. I am offering this to help find those who dumped the pigs),” the mayor said in a statement on Tuesday.

Also, he said the local government will file a writ of kalikasan before the Marikina Regional Trial Court (RTC). A writ of kalikasan is a legal remedy that provides protection of one’s constitutional right to a healthy environment.

On Tuesday, a team composed of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) and Marikina LGU took water samples in five areas in the stretch of Marikina River to check for possible contamination.

The five areas where water samples were taken include Roman Garden in Marikina; Circulo Verde in Eastwood, Quezon City; Barangay Calumpang; Barangay Tumana; and Barangay Nangka.

Earlier, Teodoro said those who are responsible in dumping the 58 pig carcasses will face criminal and civil charges.

He said they will face cases of violation of the Clean Water Act (Republic Act 9275), and the Sanitation Code of the Philippines (Presidential Decree 856).

Whether the people responsible are aware or not, the mayor said they can still be held accountable as it is still considered dumping.
