Lea Salonga has shown to us many times already that she is indeed a world-class treasure. The 47-year-old star is set to prove it to us again as she will take part in another musical masterpiece.

From slaying the role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon to touching the hearts of audience when she played the roles of Eponine and Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway, among many of her remarkable performances, Lea will be back on stage as the meat pie maker Mrs. Lovett, who bakes the “worst pie in London,” in Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

“All good things come to those who can wait. We are proud to announce that Tony and Olivier Award-winning actress LEA SALONGA is set to star in SWEENEY TODD as Mrs. Lovett!” Atlantis Theatrical announced on Facebook on Saturday, December 8.

Learning about this great news, Lea said she could not express how electrified she is to be part of one of her favorite Stephen Sondheim’s musicals.

“It pleases and tickles me to no end that I’m finally old enough to play Mrs. Lovett! She is such a well-written, thoroughly fleshed-out character that’s equal parts drama, comedy, music, and crazy. And I am all about the crazy,” Lea said.

The Broadway star, meanwhile on Twitter, wrote, “The cat’s out of the bag!!! I can’t wait to start working on this!!! To say that I’m excited is an understatement!!! Woooooot!!!”

Her fans, who also could not contain their excitement about the announcement, showered Lea with their congratulatory messages.

Directed by Atlantis Artistic Director Bobby Garcia, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be held at The Theater at Solaire in October 2019, which culminates Atlantis’ 20th anniversary.

Lea will be joining Jett Pangan, who was chosen to play the role of Sweeney Todd.

Not only known for her Broadway performances that left the audience in awe, Lea also became part of every girl’s childhood when she supplied the singing voices of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan of Mulan and Mulan II. Due to her excellent portrayal of the two Disney princesses, the Walt Disney Company recognized her as “Disney Legend” in August 2011.

Aside from this, the Filipina celebrity also starred in some movies, one of which was Sana Maulit Muli along with Aga Muhlach, and was also one of the coaches in ABS-CBN’s singing competition, The Voice of the Philippines.
