Senate to prioritize BBL, not Sereno’s impeachment trial

As the Senate resumes session on May 15, the upper house will be setting its focus on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) and not on the impeachment trial against the embattled Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III said.

On Wednesday at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, the Senator said, “I really doubt that the impeachment would be our priority when we resume on May 15. Perhaps the BBL would be the priority.”

The impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon last August 30, 2017 which gathered the house’s approval covers grounds of Sereno’s “corruption, culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust and other high crimes.”

If the articles of impeachment which was approved by the House of Representatives’ committee last Monday would also get a go signal from the plenary, it would then be forwarded to the Senate for trial.

With this, Sotto said the there is no way for the impeachment trial to start on May and will probably commence in August.
