Duterte supports anti-dynasty bill; doubts approval by Congress

President Rodrigo Duterte expressed support in the abolishment of political dynasties but doubts the proposal’s passage in the Congress and whether this will be welcomed by the public.

The president said “few of the principled men” would want to see the anti-dynasty bill succeed and that he too was for it but having the proposal approved may not come easy.

“A few of the principled men, I would say, want this kind of thing about dynasty abolished. I am for it. But the problem is, will it pass?” Duterte said in a speech during the General Assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines.

Duterte said the case is that voters themselves are showing that they are okay to be ruled by an official whose kin has already served them, especially when the latter governed well.

“Here with us, after you, they would ask for your son or your wife,” he said.

Duterte added that this could be the reason why Davaoeños have chosen her daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio as their mayor–they wanted to continue what the elder Duterte started.

He also stressed the cleanness and peace in his hometown enforced during his governance.

“Drugs is minimal and the law and order is very good. It took me about three terms really to perfect the system. And that come without thoughts. If they say many died, there are really many deaths because I was one of those… I think who really wanted to get rid of drugs,” Duterte said.
