MANILA — The city government of Taguig has passed a resolution approving the release of PHP3 million for calamity assistance to Albay residents affected by the Mayon Volcano’s eruption.

The move comes after the declaration of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Albay placing the province under a state of calamity after the continuous eruption of the volcano earlier this month.

“We’ve seen the news and we know that they really need our help. We hope that through this simple act, we will be able to give them hope and love,” Cayetano, who also hails from Albay, said in a statement.

Cayetano also asked everyone to include the safety and well-being of the Filipinos affected in the province of Albay in their thoughts and prayers.

The financial assistance being extended by Taguig City is just the latest of the regular help that it extends to other local government units.

When typhoon Nina devastated Bicol Region in December 2016, Taguig City provided PHP9-million calamity assistance.

The lady mayor, her husband Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, together with Vice Mayor Ricardo “Ading” Cruz Jr. and some city councilors, also personally visited the provinces of Albay and Camarines Sur and the people of the areas adversely affected by the typhoon.

Last September 2017, House Deputy Speaker and Taguig 2nd District Rep. Pia Cayetano and other city officials made a personal visit to Marawi residents and turned over 46 crates of relief goods to the disaster operation center of Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 10 in Marawi City.

The city also handed PHP1-million calamity assistance to the residents affected by typhoon Lawin which lashed the provinces of Kalinga, Apayao, Mountain Province, Abra and Benguet in October 2016. In January 2014, the local government also turned over a total of P1.25 million in calamity assistance funds to five municipalities in Eastern Samar hit by Super Typhoon Yolanda.

“Taguigeños will continue to give assistance to our fellow Filipinos. We will always try to extend our support as much as we can to those who are really in need,” the lady mayor added.
