MANILA — Caritas Manila, the social action arm of the Archdiocese of Manila, is appealing for people to pray and donate in cash or in kind for those affected by tropical depression “Urduja” that hit parts of eastern Visayas this week.

“As we approach the commemoration of our Savior’s birth, Caritas Manila and Radio Veritas is appealing for prayers for Divine protection and to help alleviate the sufferings through donations in cash and in kind for the relief and rehabilitation needs of our kababayans affected by Tropical Storm Urdjua,” Caritas Manila said in a statement.

With this, the Church-based organization has asked the Catholic faithful to donate the basic needs of the people affected by the storm that triggered massive flooding in MIMAROPA and Regions V, VI, VII and VIII.

“Cash or In-kind donations for food assistance particularly rice could help supplement the food intake of every affected family. Schools supplies, Hygiene kits, multivitamins and medicines for cough, colds and fever for the adults and children are also in dire need,” said Caritas Manila.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) have reported that almost 2,200 stranded passengers have been stranded in different ports (mostly in Manila North Harbor) in the country.

Also, four bridges in Biliran, Samar and Leyte are currently impassable while 17 road sections in ‘Urduja’-hit areas are currently impassable.

Furthermore, a total of 26 casualties and 46 missing have been reported due to landslide especially in Biliran.
