Celebrate unique, genuine Flipino values: DepEd
MANILA — Values that countries hold sacred distinguish them from the rest. Are students aware of values distinct to Filipinos?
The Department of Education (DepEd) has reminded schools to observe the Filipino Values Month, which is slated every November.
DepEd is urging schools to celebrate the Filipino Values Month by conducting activities such as seminars, poem/story/song writing competitions, poster-making and art exhibits, among others, that would encourage students to appreciate and recognize values held important by Filipinos.
In a statement, DepEd highlighted the need to observe the Filipino Values Month, to help strengthen the Filipino culture and traits. The agency cited the following core values: maka-Diyos (pro-God), makatao (pro-people), makakalikasan (pro-nature) and makabansa (pro-country).
DepEd added that observing the Filipino Values Month would encourage students as well as the public to contribute in nation-building by way of upholding positive values. The agency also believes that the observance would further instill the Filipino values to individuals.
The Filipino Values Month is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 479, s. 1994, declaring every November to observe/celebrate this.
This year’s theme is “Kahinahunan at Katatagan: Tugon sa Makabago at Mapanghamong Panahon”, which DepEd said highlights the importance of composure and strength in spirit amid the challenging times.
The agency added that the celebration was also anchored on the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, which aims to produce “holistically developed and socially responsible citizens equipped not only with competencies, but also with essential values.”
