MANILA — The city council of Taguig has passed a resolution approving the release of PHP1.5 million for calamity assistance for Marawi City which has been plagued by ongoing clashes between government troops and the Maute terrorists.

The resolution said the local council of Marawi declared the city under a state of calamity through Resolution No.

60, after “terrorist attacks” that saw the Maute Group and the military engaging in gunfights in Barangay Basak Malutlut on May 23.

It added that over 30,000 families or 140,000 individuals were displaced as a result, while properties were “severely damaged.

“We are very eager in helping our brothers and sisters. We want them to feel that they are not alone in this battle. We want this simple act to give them hope in their hearts,” Mayor Lani Cayetano, who primarily urged the council to provide the needed assistance to Marawi, said.

The mayor also asked everyone “to include the restoration of peace in Marawi City in their prayers,” as she enjoined everyone to do what they could to help.

Fighting with the Maute Group terrorists started shortly after attempts by the military to apprehend Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, a staunch ally of the lawless elements, last May 23.

As of Wednesday, the number of terrorists killed is placed at 343 along with 85 government troops and 44 civilians executed.
