NHCP declares Rizal Memorial as national historical landmark

MANILA–The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) declared the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex a national historical landmark.

The declaration was contained in Resolution no. 5, which was ratified through its board meeting on March 27, and posted in National Committee on Monuments and Sites’ (NCMS) Facebook page on Tuesday.

The development came a year after the National Museum named the said athletic area along the intersection of Ocampo and Adriatico Streets as an “important cultural property”.

The NHCP’s declaration came just as the proposed conversion of the Rizal Memorial Coliseum into a mall is still being talked about.

Various people, particularly heritage advocates, strongly opposed the proposal, and the said declaration could mean a victory for them.
