MANILA—Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has promised to refrain from swearing. To make this happen, Duterte vowed to donate P1,000 for every profanity that would come off his mouth.

“I am regulating myself and I will donate P1,000 to the Caritas Davao Foundation every time I would swear,” Duterte was quoted as saying in a Philippine Star report.

Duterte was under fire recently for his expletive statements directed to the Pope during his proclamation ceremony as Partido Demokratikong Pilipino- Laban’s presidential bet in the 2016 election. He claimed that the expletive remark was not directed to the Pope but to the government who, according to Duterte, mismanaged the Papal visit.

The offspring of Duterte apologized on his behalf while the mayor convened with Davao City Archbishop Romulo Valles and asked for the Church’s forgiveness.

“I was admonished and lectured on Christian values and in return, I told them that I would lessen my use of cuss words,” said Duterte in the same report.

During the two-hour meeting, Duterte cursed twice and as promised, he donated P2,000 to the foundation.

Duterte also told the media his planned trip to Vatican and how his meeting with the clergy went.

“I am also planning to visit the Vatican soon. It was a good meeting and I would like to thank my friends in the church for their time,” he said in the same report.

Despite Duterte’s spat with the Church, he said that he has strong faith in God and remains a Catholic.
