Manila—The Social Security System announced yesterday that application for membership number can now be done online.

Employees applying for SSS number, a mandatory requirement to private sector and household employees, can now just go to www.sss.gov.ph to process their application.

Millions of current and future Filipino workers are expected to benefit from the web issuance of social security numbers, said Renato Malto, officer-in-charge of the SSS Delivery Department of the SSS, in a statement released to The Manila Bulletin.

“Those eligible for voluntary SSS membership, such as overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and non-working spouses of active SSS members, can also apply for their own SS number through our website,” Malto said.

Self-employed workers such as freelancer, entrepreneurs, and informal sector workers are also encouraged to apply online.

Online application for social security number is a two-phase process. The first part of the process involves verifying if an applicant already has an existing SS number in the web base. The worker should provide his full name, birth date, and email address.

“Once the SSS has determined that the applicant has no previous SS number, the web system will prompt the worker to provide additional details during the second phase,” said Malto.

Additional details include home address, contact information, marital status, and names of the spouse, parents and children.

Results of the two-phase registration process will be sent through email, Malto said.

The SS number issued online is “temporary” and employees must convert it to permanent status by submitting valid supporting documents to any SSS branch nationwide.

“Once the worker has successfully changed the temporary SS number to a permanent one, it can be used to file for various SSS benefits and loan privileges, as well as to apply for the UMID [Unified Multipurpose Identification] card if at least one monthly contribution has already been posted,” Malto added.
