MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)  required public utility buses (PUBs) to have a global positioning system (GPS) device starting September.

This will allow authorities to track down the location of the vehicles and monitor its speed.

In a memorandum circular, all bus operators were required to install the device Sept. 1 this year to Jan. 31, 2016, for provincial buses entering Metro Manila

For buses operating in Manila, the registration period is from Jan. 1 to April 30, 2016; April 1 to July 31, 2016 for inter-regional buses not entering Manila; and July 1 to October 31, 2016, for intra-regional buses.

Those who will miss the said deadlines will be fined P5,000 for every unit found without a GPS device and an additional fine of P1,000 per unit for every month of continued noncompliance.

“The board’s main aim is to protect the safety of the riding public by regulating the speed limit of buses traversing our national roads and highways.
