MANILA–The Department of Health (DOH) once more reminded vacationers to stay safe while swimming.

“Drowning is one of the biggest causes of death among children. Our advice is for parents and guardians to watch over them when they swim,” said Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Ubial.

Adults should likewise be cautious, especially when venturing into the deeper portions of the water, as they could experience fatigue or cramps, making it difficult for them to swim to safety, she pointed out.

Ubial said it would be best not to attempt to go very far from the shoreline without notifying one’s companions, who could check on them.

As for cramps, she said they could not be predicted so it would be better for swimmers not to go far.

The health chief also warned swimmers against any attempt to go into the waters if they are drinking alcohol.

“Decision-making is actually affected by the intake of alcohol,” she said.
