MANILA—The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will look into the issue on the alleged irregularities in the destruction of seized contraband angle bars.

“The question on whether there had been irregularities on the destruction of the angle bars will be investigated,” said BOC Spokesperson Mandy Anderson in a statement.

With this, she noted that procedures in the destruction of the seized items will be obeyed.

“We ensure the public that proper procedures will be followed. Should there be any irregularities found, those involved will be dealt with severely,” the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Commissioner added.

On the other hand, Atty. Oscar Villalva, Acting Chief, Auction and Cargo Disposal Division (ACDD) of the Port of Manila said they complied with the destruction requirements as set forth under relevant customs laws, rules, and procedures, ensuring that ultimately, the substandard steel products are disposed of accordingly.

The Federation of Philippine Industries has raised the issue on the alleged irregulaties in the destruction of the seized items.

He added that they have given notices of said destruction to the Department of Trade and Industry and the Commission on Audit.

Villalva said that notices were sent several times to the Steel Angles, Shapes and Sections Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc.

However, the ACDD said that they cannot delay the destruction of the angle bars if other external entities remain unresponsive to the notices they sent.

The weighing machine used in the procedure was provided by Asian Terminals, Inc. but while results were handwritten, the same reflected the values as shown in the machine.

The scrap metals also took a longer time to undergo destruction because acetylene was used instead of cutting machines.
