Lino Brocka’s “Maynila” wins award in London

The timeless classic film of Lino Brocka’s “Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag” which was first released in 1975, was recognized as the “Best Archive Restoration/ Preservation Title” at the 11th annual Federation of Commercial Audiovisual Libraries (FOCAL ) International Awards held April 30 in London.

The Film Development Council of the Philippines and The Film Foundation / World Cinema Project of Martin Scorsese worked together for the said project.

Cineteca di Blogna and L’Immagine Ritrovata laboratory, restored the film in association with LVN, Cinema Artists Philippines and writer-director Mike De Leon.

The nomination was sponsored by FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives).

On behalf of the Film Foundation, World Cinema Project, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, Scorsese thanked all those who have been part of the outstanding restoration.

“We were thrilled when the opportunity came to restore Manila, one of Brocka’s greatest films,” Scorsese said.

“It means a great deal to us to see our efforts acknowledged,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, FDCP Chairman Briccio Santos shared, “FDCP is most honored by this latest recognition for a film of great heritage significance to Filipino. This affirms FDCP efforts to pursue the preservation and restoration of the country’s cinema classics.”
