MANILA– The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday said it respects the decision of the Commission on Appointments who rejected the appointment of DFA Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr.

DFA spokesman and Assistant Secretary Charles Jose said the agency would await President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision who would replace Yasay as chief envoy.

“In the meantime, we will ensure that the transition will go smoothly and that the DFA continues to carry out its work effectively,” Jose said in a text message when asked by DFA reporters who will replace Yasay.

According to Jose, if seniority will be the basis, DFA Undersecretary for Policy Enrique Manalo is likely the next in line should an officer-in-charge.

Yasay was the first DFA secretary rejected by the bicameral body. But on its possible effect to the department, Jose said: “I don’t think it will have any implication.

“The confirmation is an internal process and other countries know better than to comment on it. But Philippines’ conduct of foreign relations will continue. We have institutions in place for that,” he explained.
