MANILA –The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday said all 300 Filipinos affected by the recent Qatar fire are safe.

DFA spokesman and Assistant Secretary Charles Jose made this assurance after talking to embassy officials in Doha who reported that all are accounted for and were given assistance.

“The embassy went there last Saturday and there were no casualties,” Jose said in a text messsage to reporters covering DFA.

Embassy officials rushed to the scene upon learning of the incident to check on the conditions of affected OFWs and their needs.

Reports said around 300 Filipinos were affected by the blaze when the UCC Labor Compound, the company accommodation quarters in Al-Shahaniya, Qatar, went up in smoke last Friday at 4p.m.

One Filipino was reportedly slightly hurt during the fire.

The fire started on a three-storey building where more than 1,000 foreign workers stay.

Filipinos failed to save their belongings because they were at work when the fire broke out. Most of them are working as cleaners and tea servers.
