MANILA—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is looking to issue a new design for the voters’ identification (ID) card.

Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista said they are planning of improving the current appearance of the voters’ ID.

“The old voters’ ID is the one that is a laminated paper. It does not look well. So, what we want is to upgrade it to a better one,” he said at the Voter Registration Awareness Caravan at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) on Wednesday.

But, the new ID will cost “less than PHP100” as compared to the old ID which is for free.

Bautista explained that the public especially those who already have the old voter’s ID may avail of the new ID once it is approved.

“Even those in possession of the old voters’ ID will be given the option to apply for the new voters’ IDs,” he added.

The poll body chief noted that they are looking to pilot test the project in Metro Manila.

Bautista revealed that they are already coordinating with the National Printing Office as to the production of the new voters’ ID.

The voters’ ID is a valid ID recognized by all government offices and banks, although it is not a requirement for a person to vote.
