MANILA—Close to 40,000 registered voters in Metro Manila have already received their voters’ identification (ID) cards, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.

In a statement, the poll body said Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs) in the National Capital Region (NCR) have distributed a total of 38,927 voters’ ID during the period of January 27 to February 11.

Majority of the voters’ ID released are in Quezon City (4th District) with 38,330.

The other areas that already released the IDs are Manila City (2nd District) with 383; 120 in Malabon City; and 94 in Manila City (5th District).

The figures from other OEOs in Metro Manila were not available.

Meanwhile, a total of 33,275 IDs have been withheld due to various reasons.

The Comelec – NCR reported that among the reasons for withholding voters’ IDs are deactivations of registration records, cancellation of registration records due to death, deletion due to AFIS or double/multiple records, transfer of registration records which include change of entry/data in the card, and/or change/correction of entries in the registration records.

According to the Comelec, there are over six million voters’ IDs that have remained unclaimed in different local OEOs all over the country, as of July 2016.

The voter’s ID is issued to all registered voters.

The card is recognized by all government offices and banks as a valid ID, but it is not a requirement for a person to be able to vote.
