MANILA — A Catholic priest said that husbands and wives could learn many things such as perseverance in times of difficulties and sacrifice from a segment of a top-rating noontime show featuring a couple who have never met.

Fr. Regj Mamaril, director of the San Pablo Diocesan Youth Commision, said couples should not give up if they face trials.

“Greatness is given when we are able to face the most difficult, the most painful situation in life even unto death,” he said in an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website.

Citing the episode where actor/singer Alden Richards and showbiz newbie Maine Mendoza aka Yaya Dub were supposed to meet when a piece of plywood suddenly popped up between them, Mamaril noted the natural tendency of husbands and wives who experience obstacles in their marital journey is to give up.

“The person who gives up or turns his back on life’s challenges never wins,” said the priest of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Calendola Village, San Pedro City,

He added, “When [husbands and wives] encounter the hardships of married life, their tendency is to turn their backs or separate.”

Mamaril, who has been serving in his parish for more than two years now, also quoted Scripture, “when the Son of Man, Jesus, was handed over to men to be killed, Jesus also faced that challenge.

Likewise, the priest added that those who have unwanted pregnancies can learn the same lessons, saying many resort to abortion because they run away from the challenge of life.

Mamaril said these people simply realize the “shame” of their situation and resort to abortion without recognizing it as one of life’s challenges.

The tandem, Aldub, combining the names of Alden and Yaya dub became an instant hit leaving the competition far behind. The love team is part of the longest-running noontime show Eat Bulaga on GMA 7.
